I met Chuan de La Hosseraye, CEO of AWB (A Well Being company) in her office. On the one hand she has the strength and the confidence to realise her dream and conquer the market such as a business tycoon and on the other hand she also have the kindness and concern for other people.
Could you tell me more about your background?
My background has been quite complex. I started my career in the technology field. I have a computer engineering background. I have been working in the technology consulting sector for 10 years. Afterwards, I realized there was something more. Technology is just a tool. It does not represent the real life, the most important. I became more interested in people. I decided to change my career. I moved back from UK and in China I had the opportunity to work on the Olympic Games event management. I was taking care of the hospitality for the sponsors. This changed completely my career. Since that point on, I worked for Women's Forum a French association. I was helping them to develop the Chinese market. After that, I had my child and my mom has been diagnosed from cancer. My main focus was to support my mother. It has triggered my interest, and I started to read many books, attend talks, meetings, workshops and seminars to understand the decease. After two years, mom has unfortunately passed away and I decided to help more people to raise health awareness. Because our modern lifestyle has enormous impact on our health.
What is the mission of the company you are running?
During that period I already have the idea to set up something to help people live better. I was doing a lot of public awareness event. I realized a lot of people restrict themselves to live a healthy lifestyle due to their work life. Some people do not believe that they should take care of their health and they actually believe health is not under their control. My aim is to raise awareness. I realized the workplace is a good place to work on. In a corporation, you have not only employees but the human resources and all the structure to leverage AWB’s mission. It makes a perfect place to promote health. Finally but not least, I learnt that to attract people, do not prevent decease, but promote health. In other terms, do not speak about negative things, but positive. AWB is to help people, it is something positive. In the latest stage, through the workplace, we can reach communities or families.
What kind of services are you offering to companies?
We are offering many services, majority consultancy to help them to understand the importance to promote health and the way to create a good structure for that purpose. Many companies have the idea to deliver services for their employees to live better but they don’t have an integrated way to do it. For example it could be a one off initiative, such as sport competition or fitness membership, but they don’t have a strategic way of implementing health in their business. We are offering them a comprehensive and structured way to do it because it has an impact on their business and employees productivity and motivation.
In the same time, we provide concrete services in 5 different domains: Medical awareness (health risk assessment, support in certain condition); Healthy eating; Physical exercise; Emotional wellness; and finally the Workplace environment. We want to use the corporate as a media to promote health.
What are the strengths of AWB?
In china there are no company doing that. There a lot of companies dealing with health management, but more on the medical side i.e: medical assistance. There is EAP as well that deals with psychological support for employees. No company provides a total solution like us. Our strength is that we have a good understanding, we are supporting by many companies which have been really advanced in the sector. These companies are pioneer and leader in the domain. They have built advanced health promotion programmes. We are part of the World Economic Forum's Workplace Wellness Alliance, we get instant access to specialists and the latest knowledge. We are really pioneer in China in this field.
What is the future of the industry in China?
It will be emerging very quickly. Everybody is aware that there is an issue. Sometimes you can hear stories that a young died of a heart attack or someone suicide because of stress at work. Government is also taking measure to overcome this coming issue. Little by little, these practices are become standard. So in 10 years’ time, it will become common practices, every companies will have something. Look at Singapore or Sweden, now it is a standard practice. In China we are starting later than the others.
